The Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated
On February 19–20, hundreds of members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® will visit the Georgia State Capitol. They will express their frustrations to the elected people there and push them to pass laws that will benefit the communities they represent.
The event, which is in its 30th year, has "Preserving the Promise of Democracy" as its 2023 topic. On February 19, activities will take place digitally, while attendees from both online and offline locations are welcome to events on February 20.
The oldest Greek-letter organization founded by Black, college-educated women is Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.®.
We were established with the purpose of serving, and we take this duty incredibly seriously. As future legislation is being discussed, we are able to meet with elected leaders, speaking up for those in the areas we serve, and ensuring that all voices are heard.
Advancing fairness and equity, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® has always been in the forefront of social justice.
As a member of this illustrious organization, I was able to attend both both events. Some of the main points were to educate, motivate, and mobilize. Voting is so important and people have to be ready to have real conversations. Education includes talking about and getting involved at the local level. Leaders and people who are trying to get people within the community to vote have to speak the truth and set the atmosphere.
We now have more members in high positions in the government ever before. To name a few includes: Vice President Kamala Harris, Congresswoman Nikema Williams, and State Representative Carolyn Hugely. Collaboration is the new currency and we have to continue to push forward and break barriers to not just preserve this democracy, but to make it to where the citizens needs are met.
Women in politics around the world, and women of color in particular, face severe levels of mistreatment and misinformation through their campaigns, which are frequently fueled and sustained by traditional and social media. Studies have demonstrated that women are frequently deterred and actively discouraged from being active in politics because of gendered media reporting, which serves the objective of undermining, discrediting, and attempting to silence women in politics.
Collaboration is the new currency and we have to continue to push forward and break barriers to not just preserve this democracy, but to make it to where the citizens needs are met. Alpha Kappa Alpha women will continue to pave the way and soar to greater heights.
