The Latest on Abortions

According to a survey released , the most thorough and recent count of abortions nationally, the total number of legal abortions in the United States dropped barely over 6 percent in the six months following the Supreme Court's decision to take away the right to abortion last June.

The overall reduction is greater than some researchers had predicted prior to the Supreme Court decision. More women than anticipated appear to have been stopped from getting legal abortions by new limitations and the challenges they impose, such as the logistics and costs of travel, lengthy wait periods at some facilities, and misunderstanding or fear of the law.

According to epidemiology professor Alison Norris, one of the report's authors, "the barriers that were put in place were not surmountable" for many women seeking abortions. She claimed that despite many clinics increasing their capacity, "it is insufficient to manage the losses."

The data covers the period until December 31, by which time abortion had been outlawed in 13 states with nearly no exceptions, and in Georgia after six weeks of pregnancy. Legal abortions decreased to almost zero in the states that have outright bans, averaging around 7,300 less per month compared to April and May.

In places where abortion is still allowed, they grew by an average of 2,100 every month, indicating that some women may have crossed state lines. Only a third of the decline in the states with bans was compensated by the increase.

  1. This is very interesting to look into mostly because of the overall statistic of it. I am really shocked that researchers didn't expect such a large decline in abortions. If you take a moment to really evaluate, a lot of people would not have the means to travel completely out of their state in order to do a procedure. By limiting the availability of abortion clinics in the area, you limit women's opportunity of having it done because that would now involve time off to travel as well as extra expenses to travel and possibly house yourself. Naturally with those odds against women, they would be less inclined to get an abortion.
