Young Liberal Women, Gen. Z
They observed recent studies, data, articles, and polling about high numbers of young women who identify as liberal or progressive reporting they feel anxious or depressed or have been informed they have mental health disorders as we were arranging our most recent Times Opinion focus groups.
They gathered 13 progressive young women to discuss their experiences with mental health and, more broadly, whether Generation Zers face particular mental health challenges or if Gen Zers are simply more open about their struggles than previous generations are in an effort to better understand this data as well as the pressures and self-awareness among some young Americans today.
Only three of the women stated they frequently felt down, melancholy, or hopeless, despite the fact that dealing with mental health issues was a common experience for them all. Twelve people expressed optimism for the future.
Another participant, Molly, 25, stated, "Our age devotes more time and energy to enhancing mental health and the human side of ourselves. Many of the young women claimed that being progressive or liberal gave them a stronger desire to learn about topics, made them more accepting of others' differences, and made them more open.
The group was generally upbeat about the future, but they had nothing but bad things to say about the leading candidates for the 2024 presidential election. Participants rated Donald J. Trump as "manipulative," "scary," and "misogynistic," while some called Vice President Joe Biden "disappointing," "moderate, bummer," and "an example of what not to do as president."Many of them also have low opinions of Kamala Harris, the vice president.

Thanks so much for your post this week! I did not see this article, I think this was a really interesting topic and project to touch on. As a progressive Gen-Z (in between GenZ and Millenial), I am surprised that more women did not report feeling hopeless or melancholy about the future. I try and keep positive about the world and what's happening, but it is most definitely a scary world and I struggle to imagine how we could correct all these issues as a whole. It is nice to know that these women feel positive about pushing forward and making change in the world, in the past I feel that many more women would have reported those feelings towards the future.
